What is The American Board of Orthodontics?
The American Board of Orthodontics offers a certification program for orthodontists. Certification, which is a voluntary process, provides an extensive review of the orthodontist’s basic education, as well as an intensive assessment of the orthodontist’s clinical expertise. Orthodontists may become certified as a Diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontics upon completion of three steps:
Phase I – Application,
Phase II – Written Examination, and
Phase III – Clinical Examination.
Upon completion of all three steps the orthodontist earns the certificate of the Board and the title “Diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontics”. Certification as a Diplomate signifies a unique achievement. As of March 2003, there are only 2,023 orthodontists throughout the world who are Diplomates.
